The Lion King (1994) is considered as one of Disney’s classics including the musicals in between the film with Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff directed this film. This film is considered as Disney’s classic probably because they released this movie in early ‘90s where the animation is not as good as it is now. However, in 2011 they retouched the film and released it again as a 3D animation movie. This movie presents the story of Simba’s journey throughout his adulthood, there are lots of parts that talk about past as well as accepting it. Not only that, there is also a crime in between characters such as regicide where Scar is trying take over Mufasa’s throne. In a sense, this film can be seen a little bit dark and too intense considering the target audiences is children.
The Lion King started with the famous song Circle of Life by Elton John, especially the beginning of the lyrics where people in ‘90s just know that it belongs to a movie called The Lion King. Furthermore, the phrase “circle of life” thus then is significant throughout the movie, where Mufasa then explained a little about circle of life. Moving on, during this the camera shows how all the animals are gathered into one place to hail their future king of the jungle and where Mufasa is standing tall in the highest rock. It showed how much power that he has towards the others animals. Especially after a baboon named Rafiki held aloft the lion cub which name is Simba, the camera angle showed the feet of other animals where they all bow down to their future king. The next scene showed Mufasa’s brother, called Scar, who was rambling about how life is not fair. This is mainly because he is jealous and wanted to be a King of the Pride Rock. However, it turns out he cannot be a king knowing that Simba is the next in line to be king. Skipping into the dark place that was forbidden for Simba, he was tricked by his uncle that it was an elephant graveyard. The scene was all dark with smoke surrounded them. Even though there is a skeleton over there, this is a little bit scary for children around age of 4 until 7. The Hyenas are scary to look at, and this scene will make anxious because Simba and Nala were cornered by them and almost got eaten as well.
The best thing about The Lion King is that the directors managed to capture the beautiful scenery in the movie. On the next scene after Mufasa rescued Simba and Nala, the sky’s colors look beautiful and breath-taking with how the sky colors were pinkish then turn into night where the camera shot starts to zoom out to capture the whole sky and gives a view of the stars. This is mainly to complement Mufasa’s explanation about how all the stars up there used to be the King of Pride Rock and now they are all looking out for them from up there. Moving on to the next scene, it was a dark with a little bit of green in it, which means evil. It is a typical scene where it lays majority of evil characters. Not only just because it was dark and have a background sound, but it tends to have a hint of green as the flames. This is perhaps, to give an intense moment and dark moment where everything is not sure. Furthermore, the scene where Simba was left in the middle of savannah by his uncle Scar, the camera angle started zooming out again to capture how high it was from the land up there where his dad lives. However, turns out it was a trick again by Scar and to spoil the story, Mufasa was killed and fell into a cackle of hyenas that stampeded him to death.
Moreover, after Simba ran away he then met Timon and Pumba, a meerkat and a warthog. As stated from above, The Lion King managed to capture the beautiful land and in this case the jungle where Simba spent majority of childhood there until adulthood. This is a scene where the phrase “Hakuna Matata” was famous for, which means “no worries”.

Not long after that, he then met Nala his childhood friend and she asked him to come back to Pride Rock. Turns out in Pride Rock there is no life anymore ever since Scar took over Mufasa’s place. The camera angle shots zoom out capturing the landscape of Pride Rock where there is no grass, and everything looks gloomy. This can be supported how the Hyenas told Scar that there is no food left. Furthermore, Rafiki the Baboon then found out that Simba was alive then managed to knack a sense to him by visiting Mufasa. This is a scene where it is famous with the quote that has meaning that you cannot change the past.
After Simba decided he wanted to come back, with a dark background the scene captured the Pride Rock landscape where there are lots of skeleton of animals and there is no life like it used to be, especially when Simba was still a little lion. Skipping to where Simba and Scar were having a fight because Scar finally admitted that he killed Mufasa. The scene that surrounded them are all dark and red. Red represents anger, in this case, it complements their scene because of the anger from both sides as well that it is dark because it is not a happy scene. After Scar was cornered by the Hyenas, it is started raining and it skipped to years after that turning event, where the Pride Rock starting to show that there are animals living there or in other words the circle of life is starting again.
Overall, The Lion King managed to capture the beautiful scene of Pride Rock in terms of color for the landscape as well as the sky. However, in terms for target audiences, the Lion King can be considered as something that is dark and intense. So, it is perhaps good to watch for children above age 6 until up. This is mainly because there is death mentioned, and a little bit dark scenes, which usually means that it is scary, and the audiences that is going to watch it will be anxious over it.
